tiny mauve square   Fashion and Design from Italy has been on the web since February 1995. It was the first ever web about fashion. We're working on a new section about Italian Design - industrial design that includes furniture, ceramics, bathrooms, home and office accessories, automobiles and other articles that have won prizes throughout the world and are exhibited in museums such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Sergio ValenteSergio Valente obtained his diploma in accounting but soon realised that math and numbers were not for him. He decided to study languages which he believed offered more possibilities for the future; at the time Rome was preparing itself for the 1960 Olympics and english was a highly requested language.

Sergio was hired by Filippo, the Italian capital's most famous hairdresser. His career was fast and in 1966 he made his debut with a Vogue Italia cover page. In 1970 he received the Art and Fashion Oscar and was hailed by the Italian and foreign press for the originality of his creations.

The "heads" he created for Lancetti, Capucci, Mila Schon, and Fendi were so exceptional that in 1971 he was able to open a Beauty Centre in Rome's Via Condotti, in the former atelier of Fabiani, one of Italy's most important post-war designers. Names such as Valentino and Fendi have entrusted their models into his able hands.

In 1985 a book entitled "Ricci and Capricci" was published to celebrate Valente's first 25 years in the business. Pia Soli, author of the book considers Sergio Valente the most creative spirit in his sector. In 1986, he received a prize from the International Centre for Culture in Rome.

Valente then opened a second salon (after his first in Rome) in New York where he took his Italian creativity and his experience after years of hard work. Oscar de la Renta and Carolina Herrera are just two of the great names of American fashion with whom he worked. In 1987 he won the prestigious President Award - Most Creative Contribution in New York and three years later he obtained the "World hair designer" award in New Orleans.

Valente has participated in a great number of television programs. In 1992 he was the artistic coordinator of "Donna Sotto le Stelle", the Italian fashion show televised throughout the world and held on the famous Spanish Steps in Rome with the participation of the most important names in the industry and a choice selection of top odels.

1993 saw the widening of relations between east and west in the fashion world. The chinese ambassador to Rome opened up his residence to the models of one of Beijing's most well-known designers, Xu Xiaoping, and to Sergio Valente's hair-styles inspired by Chinese culture and traditions. During this important event, Valente was invited to give "haute couture" lessons in China in 1995, and be the representative of the international fashion of hairstyle in that country.

The "look" of the artists at the Vatican's 1994 Christmas concert was also the work of Sergio Valente. The concert included well-known artists such as tenor Alfredo Kraus and soprano Renata Scotto and was broadcast in worldvision on Christmas eve.

Sergio Valente is also involved in a number of charitable activies, among them the organization for the past two years of an auction of Christmas trees decorated by celebrities whose proceeds go to the Aids Foundation for children sponsored by designer Valentino. The son and daughter of Valente's late brother, whom he raised from childhood, also work with him.
