Galleria Roma Virtuale 2001 was created in December 1994 (as soon as the web became available to common mortals in Italy!) when a friend asked us to participate in First Night in Cyberspace held on New Year's eve in New York, Boston, San Francisco, Sydney, and other cities around the world. The tradition of "First Night" is an artistic alternative where people can celebrate New Year's Eve, often in the streets of these cities.
It was explained that "First Night" is an artistic alternative that takes place in a number of large cities with the participation of local authorities where people can celebrate the arrival of the new year without spending a lot of money in hotels or nightclubs.
Internet communities above all in Boston and New York wanted to connect the events via Internet (web cams were not available at the time) through chat. Since April of 1994 we were working to make Internet known to Italians and thought this would be a wonderful opportunity. Although virtually unknown in Italy at the time, Antonio Concina, PR manager for the state phone company TELECOM, along with Apple Computer Italia, McLink, and other generous sponsors made it possible to organize the event.
Held in Valentina Moncada's art gallery in the historic street for Roman artists, three Macintosh computers were linked to Internet and guests were able to "chat" with guests of the parties in other cities. Since the theme was art we felt that instead of images on the walls of the gallery there should be a "virtual" art and photo gallery on the web.
Since the World Wide Web only became available to non-government or university people in Italy on December 1, 1994, we were told that putting up a web in less than a month's time was impossible. However, thanks to Alberto Berretti of the University of Tor Vergata and pioneer Internet provider McLink and the help of many friends, artists, and photographers, the Virtual Gallery was ready before December 31st.
The event, probably the first Internet event held in Italy for the public, was a great success, received a large amount of press coverage, and we decided that the Gallery could not die, so it was christened "Galleria Virtuale Roma 2001" (2000 seemed so banale!) and people are visiting it to this day.
Not only was the gallery born, but the idea of presenting the best of Italy to the world, all those things that people love about Italy, the wine, food, art, shopping, fashion, travel, and vacation, resulted in Made * In * Italy * On * Line, with the first ever web about fashion on the World Wide Web.
