Pit Stops

Some stores stay open all day, but at some point during a hectic round of shopping a pit stop is required to rest the feet and brain. Here are some suggestions.
ANTICO CAFFE' GRECO
Via Condotti 86, right opposite Gucci and Bulgari, when my daughter was small I often took her for superb hot chocolate with whipped cream and chicken sandwiches in a soft bun served on specially-made Ginori china to enjoy the old-fashioned atmosphere, the waiters in their tailcoats, and the great maestro de Chirico enjoying his afternoon tea. Still nostalgic after all these years.

HOTEL D'INGHILTERRA
Via Bocca di Leone 14, has a small quiet bar perfect for tea or an aperitivo, or the cheery salon next to it where you can have a quick, light lunch. Carla Fendi is a loyal patron.

MCDONALD'S
Piazza di Spagna, for an economical lunch try the large salad bar and take your tray downstairs if you don't like the noisy crowds upstairs.

BAR VANNI
Via Frattina 94, on warm days it's nice to sit outside at a table under an umbrella for a chicken or tuna sandwich and a glass of iced tea. If you're in a real hurry you can eat standing at the bar.

BAR CIAMPINI
Piazza San Lorenzo in Lucina 29, Tel: (06) 6876606, closed Sundays. With your back to Piazza di Spagna walk down to the end of Via Frattina, cross Via del Corso and you're in Piazza San Lorenzo di Lucina, recently opened only to pedestrians. At the far right corner you'll find the Bar Ciampini with tables outside under umbrellas, a great place to rest your weary feet and do some people-watching while having a drink, sandwich, or ice cream.

IL VALENTINO
Via della Fontanella 15, (near Piazza del Popolo) Elegant restaurant that has a business lunch Mondays through Fridays where for around 30,000 lire per person you can have a quick, light lunch in the middle of the shopping district in a nice relaxed atmosphere.

LE GRAND HOTEL
Via Emanuele Orlandi 3, was opened by Cesar Ritz at the turn of the century and is indeed grand, with a beautiful ornate lobby featuring a cozy bar at one end. Mr. Mauro Lotti is the super-experienced barman who oversees not only the magnificent afternoon tea that is served with all the trimmings during cool weather, but the Salad Bar offered every weekday which includes hot soup and sandwiches. Open from 12:30 to 3pm, it is an inexpensive way to have a healthy lunch in quiet, luxurious surroundings. Highly recommended.
