Introduction to Discount and Factory Outlet Stores
|
In Italy discount shopping really was a matter of "who you know" as in "My cousin works in a factory and can get us in the employee shop." Otherwise it was impossible as there is really no such thing in Italy as a factory outlet shop. But the recession has finally arrived here, too, and not only have various lists appeared in magazines but factories have become more "user-friendly". Obviously, as with all bargain shopping, it's the luck of the draw, or as my friend Suzy Kalter ("Born To Shop") calls it: the Moscow school of shopping - you may never get back so if you love it don't pass it up, and don't be upset if you find it someplace else for less money.
Several books have been published over the past years but I've never been able to find them. However you might get lucky at one of the big newsstands or bookstores that feature publications for foreigners. In any case, here's the best list I've been able to put together, including my sources, which I will periodically update. Obviously if you have a tip you want to pass along it will be mot appreciated. I have indicated when I've personally visited a place. Check out these places before going to any out-of-the-way places or have your hotel concierge call first for hours, days they are open, etc.
